Mission Meetup: Operation Backpack Packing Day

You’re invited to learn more about Union Gospel Mission and help us prepare for Operation Backpack 2026.

Operation Backpack is our annual effort to ensure our homeless neighbors have the warm clothing and gear they need to make it through the winter. Together, we will prepare backpacks filled with cold-weather essentials to be distributed to people living on the streets of Portland.

For many of our neighbors experiencing homelessness, winter brings added hardship and risk. A warm coat, clean clothing, and practical supplies can provide immediate comfort and protection from the elements. Just as importantly, each backpack creates an opportunity for UGM staff and volunteers to build trust, offer encouragement, and connect people with ongoing support and pathways toward stability.

Join us on Saturday, September 12 at Angela’s House for a meaningful morning of service, learning, and connection. We will begin with a short program where you’ll hear more about UGM’s mission, current ministry, and vision for the future. Afterward, we will assemble backpacks together and conclude the morning with a BBQ lunch and ice cream.

This is a great opportunity to serve alongside others, learn more about UGM’s work in the community, and be part of a practical outreach that meets urgent needs with compassion and dignity.

12:00 p.m. BBQ lunch and ice cream

Each backpack is more than a collection of warm clothing and supplies. It serves as a connection point and a first step toward a changed life as we help people find pathways out of homelessness, hunger, addiction, and abuse.
